$250K for Drinking Water Infrastructure in Powassan

April 19, 2022

POWASSAN – Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing announced that the Ontario government is investing $252,208 to improve drinking water infrastructure in Powassan. This investment is being made through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, a cost-shared, application-based infrastructure funding opportunity.

“Today’s green infrastructure investment in Powassan will bring long-lasting benefits to the residents of Powassan,” said Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing. “This investment is just one of the many ways our government is building a cleaner, more sustainable Ontario for today, and for generations to come.”

“Today’s announcement is for a water main replacement in Queen Avenue in Powassan. This water main was originally constructed in the 1950s. The Municipality of Powassan is being proactive in replacing aging infrastructure before we experience a costly failure. On behalf of the Municipality of Powassan I would like to thank Minister Fedeli and the Provincial and Federal governments for assisting with this critical upgrade,” said Peter McIsaac, Mayor of Powassan.

In Powassan this investment will support improvements to the Queens Avenue Watermain. The existing deteriorating watermain will be replaced with a PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) pipe, to increase the reliability of the water distribution network; and to reduce the likelihood of a boil water advisory or contaminants from backflow, caused by a watermain break. It will also prevent equipment failure during emergencies, and the watermain gate valves and fire hydrants will also be replaced.

Investments in key infrastructure projects build strong and healthy communities across the province. From roads and community centres – to public transit and water and wastewater systems – reliable infrastructure provides communities with opportunities to grow and develop today so that they can be resilient in the face of tomorrow.

That is why the Ontario government has been taking decisive action to support families and businesses, while boosting economic growth, improving quality of life, creating jobs, and building strong, healthy communities across the province.

These improvements will help ensure that residents continue to have reliable access to clean drinking water, while enhancing the reliability and capacity of the local water infrastructure systems.

These projects are a part of a joint investment towards 144 water infrastructure projects across Ontario that will provide residents with safer and more reliable drinking water and drinking water infrastructure. The Government of Ontario is providing more than $140.5 million in these projects.
