$10 Million for the North Bay Regional Health Centre

April 1, 2022

NORTH BAY – Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing announced that the Ontario government is providing $10 million to the North Bay Regional Health Centre. This funding includes both a $2.2 million reimbursement for the hospital’s lost revenue during the pandemic and a one-time $8 million top-up investment to address additional operating and financial pressures. Provincial support has continued to provide financial stability and high-quality patient care which people need and deserve.

This funding is in addition to the $2.6 million in COVID reimbursements announced in January, $1.9 million in March, and $2.4 million in additional operating funding announced for the 2021/22 year.

“The North Bay Regional Health Centre is a bedrock of our community, providing critical life-saving services to those who need it,” said Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing. “Our government will continue to make historic investments in healthcare, so everyone has access to timely, quality care that is close to home.”

“The funding announced today consists of two components. The first amount is to cover unrealized non-ministry revenues, including retail, that are critical to our sustainability. The second amount represents recognition by the Province of NBRHC’s specific underlying structural deficit related to funding levels. The receipt of these funds removes the burden of financial uncertainty and will allow our team to focus on providing the best care for our patients.  We are grateful to Minister Fedeli and the Province for their unwavering support of our local health needs,” said Paul Heinrich, President & CEO of the North Bay Regional Health Centre.

This funding is part of the province’s overall investment of over $1.2 billion to help hospitals recover from financial pressures created and worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hospitals have felt financial challenges not only through direct costs, but also through the loss of other forms of revenue such as parking and the reduction of retail services, all of which contribute to patient care and support clinical services.

Since the start of pandemic, Ontario has worked with its hospital partners to build unprecedented capacity and ensure that Ontarians have access to care. This includes $5.1 billion to add 3,100 beds across the province for a total of approximately 17,000 medical and surgical beds. Through additional investments, the province now has a total of 2,436 adult and pediatric ICU beds. The government remains committed to supporting hospitals so that they can continue to care for Ontarians today and in the future.
