Ontario Invests in Specialized Disaster Response Teams In North Bay

August 8, 2019

NORTH BAY — Ontario’s Government is keeping communities safe by investing $150,000 to upgrade a specialized disaster response team in the City of North Bay.

“When disaster strikes, families need to have confidence that help is on the way,” said MPP Vic Fedeli. “That’s why we’re providing North Bay with funding to respond quickly and effectively to large-scale and complex emergencies.”

The Provincial Hazardous Materials Team (HazMat) is run by its respective municipality. It is comprised of specialized police, firefighters and paramedics and supports responses to situations where the local fire department is beyond their capacity. HazMat Teams respond to large-scale or complex natural or human-caused chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive/hazardous material incidents.

“First responders put their lives on the line each and every day to protect us,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones. “That’s why we are committed to providing these brave men and women with the tools they need to keep our communities and our families safe.”
