MPP Fedeli Presents 4,271 Hydro Petitions

November 1, 2016

QUEEN’S PARK – Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli read further petitions in the Ontario Legislature today calling on the Wynne government to take meaningful action regarding the skyrocketing cost of electricity in Ontario.

“This summer, I launched a petition calling upon the Wynne government to come to their senses and stop their failed energy policies that have driven electricity costs to unaffordable levels,” said Fedeli.

“The response has been extraordinary. In fact, we’ve had 4,271 signatories to date with many more signatures still coming in,” Fedeli added.

Since this government first took office, average households in Ontario are paying $1,000 more a year on their annual hydro bills. It was recently confirmed that Ontario ratepayers now officially pay the highest residential electricity rates in North America. The Financial Accountability Officer’s report also revealed that households in Northern Ontario paid over 45% more for electricity costs than households in Toronto, between 2012 and 2014.

“The government has squandered opportunity after opportunity to provide meaningful relief from skyrocketing hydro rates. Instead they rely on band-aid solutions and talking points, and only seem interested in serving their political interests, not the interests of Ontario families and businesses,” Fedeli said.

“Thousands of signatories to the petition have made it clear – enough is enough. I will continue to read the petition in the Legislature until the Wynne government comes to its senses and ends its failed energy policies.”

The Official Opposition recently launched a website urging Ontarians to share their hydro stories so they can be raised directly to Premier Wynne in the Ontario Legislature during Question Period.

I urge everybody to visit www.hydrohorrorstory.ca and share their experiences. We will continue to press the Wynne government and draw attention to this ongoing crisis,” Fedeli concluded.
