MPP Fedeli Reads Affordable Hydro Petition On Behalf of Thousands of Signatories

September 14, 2016

QUEEN’S PARK – Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli read a petition in the Ontario Legislature today calling on the Wynne government to take meaningful action regarding the skyrocketing cost of electricity in Ontario.

“I recently launched a petition calling upon the Wynne government to come to their senses and stop their failed energy policies that have driven electricity costs to unaffordable levels, and the response has been extraordinary,” said Fedeli.

“In fact, we’ve had over 1,500 to date with many more signatures still coming in,” Fedeli added.

Since this government first took office, average households in Ontario are paying $1,000 more a year on their annual hydro bills. It was recently confirmed that Ontario ratepayers now officially pay the highest residential electricity rates in North America.

In the response to mounting pressure, the recent Throne Speech indicated the government would remove an amount equivalent to the provincial portion of the HST on hydro bills.

“The government has squandered an opportunity to provide families and seniors with meaningful relief from skyrocketing hydro rates. Instead they introduced a new billion dollar band-aid that does nothing to actually reduce hydro costs,” said Fedeli.

“Thousands of signatories to the petition have made it clear – enough is enough. I will continue to read the petition in the Legislature until the Wynne government comes to its senses and ends its failed energy policies,” Fedeli concluded.
