Ontario Providing Surplus Food Support in Nipissing
October 28, 2020NORTH BAY – Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli announced that the Gathering Place in North Bay is receiving $85,000 to support the costs of additional refrigeration infrastructure.
“Nipissing workers, businesses, and community-based organizations have shown extraordinary resilience throughout the COVID-19 outbreak,” said MPP Fedeli. “Our government is doing our part by investing urgent and direct support to help them during the pandemic.”
The Ontario government is investing over $5 million to help food rescue organizations, First Nation communities, and Indigenous organizations purchase refrigerated trucks, freezers, and storage space. This will help to safely redistribute high-quality surplus food from grocery stores and restaurants, to those in need during COVID-19 and beyond, ensuring fresh food does not go to waste. Providing this investment in refrigerated infrastructure will help food rescue organizations support Ontarians in need today and well into the future.
Reducing food waste is a key commitment of the government’s Made-in-Ontario Environment Plan, and represents a significant step in working towards growth, renewal, and economic recovery from the impacts of COVID-19 as part of Ontario’s Action Plan: Responding to COVID-19.
