Government Reverses Firefighter Certification Requirement
October 9, 2018NORTH BAY – Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli is pleased the Government of Ontario has taken action to revoke the firefighter certification regulation which had recently taken effect under direction from the previous government.
“We heard very clearly from municipalities and stakeholders that the certification regulation would present significant challenges for fire services and municipalities – in particular, small, rural and northern municipalities with volunteer fire departments,” Fedeli said.
Fire departments and municipalities had expressed concern with the resources and supports required to be compliant with the certification requirements and the potential longer-term impacts on the ability of volunteer fire services to recruit certified firefighters.
“We will continue to listen to the province’s fire services to determine what supports firefighters, fire departments, and municipalities need to keep our communities safe,” added Fedeli.
“The safety of our firefighters, their colleagues, and the public remains one of our government’s top priorities.”
