$65,000 to Support Mattawa General Hospital

November 8, 2022

NIPISSING – Vic Fedeli, MPP for Nipissing announced that the Ontario government is investing $65,000 to the Mattawa General Hospital to support both admission avoidance and discharge planning for 150 seniors with frailty to return to the community. Funding aligns with the implementation of the Alterative Level of Care (ALC) Leading Practices in the province’s hospital sector.

“Our government is investing in building a stronger, more resilient health system as part of our Plan to Stay Open: Health System and Recovery,” said MPP Vic Fedeli.“Today’s funding will support the Mattawa General Hospital to preserve their hospital capacity.”

“The Mattawa Hospital is delighted to receive this new funding support from the provincial government. This funding will go a long way towards helping to keep our seniors out of hospital and able to access supports to enable them to continue to live at home” said Pierre Noel, the hospital’s President, and CEO.

To further support Ontario’s innovative models of care, our government will provide Ontario Health with up to $64.1M in one-time funding in 2022-23. This funding is intended to reduce Alternative Level of Care (ALC) and support patient flow from hospitals to more appropriate care settings. Funding will be distributed across the following themes:

  • Capacity Maximization ($2.3M)
Leverage existing long-term care home capacity to transition long-stay beds in underutilized homes to short-stay, rehab, or convalescent beds.
  • Admission Diversion ($12M)
Increase home and community supports by leveraging Community Support Services (e.g., Adult Day Programs).
  • Discharge Supports ($23.5M)
Implement “Hospital at Home” programs and Behavioural Supports by providing the resources and assistance needed to support people as they transition safely from hospital to home with the support they require.
  • Local Strategies ($25.4M)
Work with local communities to create appropriate strategies, such as additional Alternative Health Facilities and Transitional Care Units (e.g., programs operated by hospitals within retirement homes).
  • Home and Community Care ($6.7M)
